The Bible is the Word of God. The fact that the Bible is God"s Words and that we have that Bible with us as the Word of God is the greatest blessing God has given to all Christians and to all His children. In the Bible there is history, ethics, philosophy, medicine, and science. But the Bible is not written for such knowledge. Other books are better for the knowledge of history, ethics, philosophy, medicine and science. The Bible should not be used for enjoyment or for benefits. The Bible is the story of God, God"s love, and Jesus Christ.
Then, what is God"s desire for God"s people as revealed through His Word, the Bible?
1. To Know God.
The Bible says
Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3/ Reference, Matthew 9:13)
The Bible says
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:6)
2. To Love God.
The Bible says
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6: 4, 5)
3. To Fear God.
The Bible says
Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.(Ecclesiastes 12:13,14)
4. To Obey God.
The Bible Says
But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.” (1 Samuel 15:22,23)
5. To Live a Holy Life
The Bible says
The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. (Leviticus 19:1,2)
6. To Remember God
The Bible Says
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”— before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; (Ecclesiastes 12:1,2)
The Bible says
Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. (Isaiah 46:9)
7. To Walk with God.
The Bible says
With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:6-8)
8. To have a broken heart, a poor heart
The Bible says
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. (Psalms 51:17)
9. To Repent and Return to God
The Bible says
“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. (Joel 2:12,13)
And when we hold and wrestle with the Word of God like it is our life, the Word of God is working in our lives in our hearts.
1. Helps us Overcome Sin
The Bible says
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalms 119:9-11)
2. Get Wisdom of Salvation
The Bible says
and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)
3. For instruction, reproof, righteousness, and education in righteousness.
The Bible says
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16)
4. We are perfected as God"s people and to empower us to do all good works.
The Bible says
so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:17)
Also through God"s Word, the Bible, the children of God have the following spiritual benefits.
1. Overcoming the fear that comes from suffering and adversity. Through the Word, we can have hope from discouragement and disappointment.
2. Abandoning our pride, humbly look towards God daily, and keep the grace and love of God. Through the Word, we can remember and realize our sinfulness every day..
3. Be free from laziness and be constantly in touch with God. Through the Word, we can abandon the habitual routines and fed up lifestyle and maintain our first love as a faithful servant.
But why won’t Christians hold onto this Word of Life?
1. We know the Bible is the Word of God but do not believe it.
They do not believe that the Bible is the Word of God and only think of it as a Christian book. It is not that they do not believe in God and Jesus Christ. If Christians really believe that the Bible is the Word of God, they will surely regard it as life.
2. We know that Jesus Christ is the main character of the Word, but do not love Him.
It is like knowing, loving, and believing in Jesus Christ through the Word.
If a Christian truly accepts Jesus Christ as the Savior by faith and loves Jesus Christ with all his heart, strength, will, he will hold onto the Word as life.
3. Because we do not know the terrible reality of the spiritual battle against Satan, who is in power.
Satan knows how powerful the weapon of God"s Word is in spiritual battles, so he tells us to do everything without the Word. But Christians do not know the reality of the spiritual warfare or the power of the Word.
4. Because we think we know God, God’s love and grace, Jesus Christ, and the cross of Jesus Christ.
Even if we devote every moment of our lives, we cannot know the love and grace of God and Jesus Christ. We must constantly know, believe, and love through the Word of God.
5. We think the Bible is too hard.
If we approach with our head, the most difficult book in the world is the Bible. If we approach with grace and faith, the easiest book in the world is the Bible.
6. Instead of walking everyday with God through the Word, we try to do something for God.
Service, evangelism, missions, praise and prayer, fasting, and even the place of worship become “work” unless we are denied by the Word.
7. Even if we don’t hold onto the Bible, out body is still alive.
Christians do not recognize the death of the spirit because the body is alive. Even though the spirit dies without the Word, the physical being is still living.
8. Urgent work is done first before the important work.
Nothing in the world is more important than knowing God, who gave us the free gift of eternal life, to walk with the Savior, Jesus Christ.
9. We do the work we want to do before the work we have to do.
The first hour of every day, our sinful nature refuses to humbly kneel before the Word and acknowledge God, making us give priority to what we want to do, the work that will reveal ourselves.
10. We always say we don’t have time and we will do it ‘next time.’
Morning, afternoon, evening, tomorrow, and next month. We keep pushing it off more and more. This is not because we do not have time, but because we think there is a ‘next’ time.
God"s Word is life. If a Christian lives without the Words of the Bible, he is alive but is no different from the dead.
The life of a Christian, who holds onto the Word of God as is it is their own life, will always continue.
